"The first line describes the son coming into the mom's bedroom early in the morning. He excitedly shows his hand to show how many years he is turning. He climbs in bed and they talk about the day to come. Later the mom reminisces about them planting beans in the spring.
The same author has a poem called, "Nursery" or something similar. She speaks of gazing in at her children after a difficult day. She feels guilt for yelling earlier when a child spilled the tea."
