Publicity material for this event says:

A lecture-performance with readings to mark the centenary of Edward Thomas's death on the battlefield at Arras on 9 April 1917. Thomas’s voice comes across to us as crisp and lyrical as ever, and it manages to be confiding about nature:

To-day I think
Only with scents, - scents dead leaves yield,
And bracken, and wild carrot's seed,
And the square mustard field;

Odours that rise
When the spade wounds the root of tree,
Rose, currant, raspberry, or goutweed,
Rhubarb or celery;

The smoke's smell, too,
Flowing from where a bonfire burns
The dead, the waste, the dangerous,
And all to sweetness turns.

It is enough
To smell, to crumble the dark earth,
While the robin sings over again
Sad songs of Autumn mirth.

Much more about the evening appears on the Sladers Yard website at https://sladersyard.wordpress.com/graham-fawcett . Do come ! Sladers Yard is, as many of you will already know well, a wonderful venue for poetry, and the informal buffet dinners excellent, very good value, and a good opportunity for me to talk with you all.
